The Man Who Smiled begins with Chief Inspector Kurt Wallander going through a personal and professional crisis after killing a fugitive while chasing him; he decides to leave the Ystad police force for good. At the same time, a friend of his who had asked Wallander to investigate the death of his father, who he believes was murdered, is murdered. Wallander returns to the police force, and is helped by Anne Britt, the department's first female detective, in an attempt to penetrate the "smiling" façade of the prime suspect, a wealthy multinational businessman. But just as he is about to uncover the truth, Wallander is confronted with the same mysterious threats responsible for the murders of his friend and his father.
